FURTHER TALES FROM THE SYNTHETIC
WEST:
In 1987, I played an entire gig as the keyboardist for Gatemouth Brown. I
played a synthesizer (that cost me $3700) the whole gig. For the most part, I utilized
organ and electric piano emulations. When it came time to play "San Antonio
Rose", I started making a few steel guitar noises, which surprised the hell out of
Gate. He pointed to me, and I was featured for several "rounds" doing my
synthetic steel guitar routine (which involves difficult bends and knowledge of the
correct idioms). Gatemouth Brown is a world renown master of Texas blues/jazz music. I
doubt very seriously if he would FEATURE a "non-musician" playing a
"fake" instrument in his live performance. At certain points in the gig, I
yielded the keyboard seat over to Gate, who plays excellent keyboard, and he seemed to
enjoy the hell out of my synthesizer, as did the audience. You were saying?
